Built-up roofing is a continuous, semi-flexible, multi-ply system, consisting of piles of saturated felt sheets, with alternate layers of bitumen, which is then surfaced with an applied coatingor granule cap sheet.

Advantages
Multiple LayersMultiple layers of materials provide excellent water resistance and make the roof literally impervious to standing water.
Energy EfficiencyBUR systems provide insulation and thereby increase energy efficiency.
Proven SystemBUR roofing systems have been in use for more than 100 years, and improved materials make the lifespan of a BUR system second only to metal. Most BUR roofs last 30 years, with only minimal maintenance at about 20 years.
Corrosion ResistantBUR roofs resist the corrosive qualities of acid-rain, oils, heat and other elements.
Governor's Island
Both buildings have been neglected since the Coast Guard left the island years ago. The State and City of New York are now the Owners and are in the process of restoring all historic buildings on this island. Some of the buildings date back as far as the late 1700's. The Owner, Turner Construction and Hygrade take enormous pride in being part of the restoration of this historic landmark.
Valley Hospital
The Valley Hospital needed to utilize the space more efficiently. The solution? Make the area accessible to the general public. This could be obtained by removing the existing roof over the UMR building and replacing it with a 30 year Garland System and a green scape cap.
Early Childhood School
The owner of the Early Childhood School needed a classroom space for pre-school children. Hygrade was called upon to put in a brand new JM 3-ply BUR system.
